National School Counseling Week is being celebrated February 3-7, 2025. This year’s theme is “School Counseling: Helping Students Thrive.” National School Counseling Week is to show the impact school counselors have for student success, planning for future careers, and the overall contribution they have in our school systems.
School counselors have many roles in the school system such as:
Actively engaging in helping students
Guiding academic and career planning
Focusing on positive ways to enhance students’ social/personal, educational and career development
Being school leaders and student advocates
Helping guide academic and career planning
Direct Services such as developmental counseling appropriate to students’ level; establishing personal goals and developing future plans; and responsive services with activities to meet students’ immediate needs.
Indirect Services including consultation, referrals, and collaboration with parents, teachers, etc. on behalf of students
Possible Reasons to Contact Your Child’s School Counselor:
Academic support
Career prep & post-secondary planning
Concerns with transition/adjustment, coping, problem-solving
Organization skills, study skills, and test-taking skills
Peer relationships and conflict resolution
Family changes (Divorce, separation, loss, death, grief, etc)
Substance abuse awareness
School-based and community resources info/referrals
Suicide/Bullying intervention and prevention
